Commands

Jonathan Mar 10

Description

Beyond the basic functionality of publishing updates, Presently provides a number of commands that allow you to quickly and easily perform more advanced actions. Commands are used simply by putting the command in the text of the update you are going to post as specified. You don't need to be at a special area of the site and you can utilize commands from any Presently interface.

Questions

To mark something as a question, all you have to do is ask! Literally, questions are any updates that have a question mark in them, for example:

What's for dinner?

Urgent Updates

To mark something as urgent, simply add three exclamation marks to the end of the text, such as:

The server is on fire!!!

Direct Message

You can send another user a direct message using the d command. A direct message can only be viewed by its recipient, so you can convey sensitive information through Present.ly without worrying about others being able to see it. To send a direct message, type "d" into the update prompt followed by the user or group name followed by your message. For example:

d fred Hey, did you get my e-mail earlier?

This will send a direct message of "Hey, did you get my e-mail earlier" to the user "fred".

Group Messaging

You can also send direct messages to groups. Sending a direct message to a group will create a message that is only viewable by members of that group. For instance:

d accounting I have a question about this quarter's budget.

Broadcasting

Broadcasting is a user sending an update as something else, for example a group. If you are the manager of a group, you may broadcast a message as that group, for example a meeting announcement:

b groupname Conference call in 5 minutes, 212-555-0123.

Broadcast messages are visible to anyone from the group's homepage, but will only show up in the [[Home Page]] of group members.

System Broadcasts

Account administrators can send messages as the account. This can be used for general company announcements as a quick way to reach everyone at once. To broadcast as the system, just use the command like so:

b system This message can be seen by everyone!

The '/me' Command

A familiar command to IRC users, if you type "/me" as a command it indicates a reference to yourself as an action, for example, "/me is heading out for the weekend". Presently translates this with simple asterisks surrounding your message:

/me is heading out for the weekend

Becomes the update:

*is heading out for the weekend*

Posting to Twitter (the 't!' command)

You can now post to Twitter and Presently simultaneously by adding your Twitter account credentials to your account. Click on Settings, then Services to set up the account and post to Twitter like so:

t! This update is going to Twitter and Present.ly!
